DESCRIPTION

Common ivy (Hedera helix) is a twining or climbing perennial shrub. When growing horizontally, it easily reaches 30 m in length, and when growing vertically (e.g. along a wall, etc.) it can reach 25 m. Ivy is widespread in Europe and Asia, where it originated. It has also been introduced to America and Australia.

There is a wide variety of species, the most popular of which is English ivy (Hedera helix). Ivy leaves usually have five lobes, are hard, green even in winter, and fall off only in the sixth year. There is a great variety in the shape of the leaves - from a simple shield-shaped leaf to those in the shape of a pointed star. Their edges are smooth or folded, and their color varies from solid to many combinations of white, cream, gray, green and yellow. The species with the largest leaves is Hedera canariensis. The stems are equipped with small nodes, which are actually transformed roots, with the help of which the plant clings to some support (wall, tree, bush). Contrary to popular belief, ivy is not a parasite, its roots do not suck the nutrients of the plant to which they attach, but only use it for support. Flowering is in September and October, and the flowers themselves are greenish-yellow. Their distinctive fruits ripen in late winter and early spring, completing the plant's cycle, which is diametrically opposed to that of most other plants.

Ivy adapts well and is not demanding on the soil, so it successfully grows both in the undergrowth in the mountains at an altitude of up to 1000 m, and on the Atlantic coast. It cannot withstand only severe frosts.

Ivy is used in the cosmetics industry as an ingredient in various anti-cellulite products and as an ornamental plant in the design of gardens, parks, and residential facades.

CARE

When growing at home, it is good to know that the plant suffers from heat and lack of humidity, so it is advisable to provide regular spraying of the leaves and, if possible, an unheated room in the winter, as well as sufficient light, but without exposure to direct sunlight. It is transplanted every two years, during the spring season.
