Ivalice is a kingdom blessed by the light of the gods and ruled by the Twin Lion. A year after the defeat at Ordallia in the Fifty Years' War, the king falls ill, and the throne passes to a two-year-old boy.
Whoever is appointed regent will rule in fact, and so two rival candidates emerge: Dukes Goltana and Larg, whose deeds during the war have won them great fame. Goltana the Black Lion and Larg the White Lion are destined to clash, and the resulting conflict became known as the War of the Lions.
Against this backdrop, Ramza, the third son of the House Beoulve, one of the leading military houses of Ivalice, and his childhood companion Delita, an ordinary woman raised among nobles, come to the fore. As they try to chart their path through this turbulent era, a powerful current drags them ever closer to the abyss.
